  • Encountering God – it’s not too late!

It’s not too late to join in with the new online programme: ‘Encountering God’

    • The course is an opportunity for anyone interested in becoming a Local Preacher or Worship Leader to begin training and is also offered as a ‘refresher’ for all Worship Leaders and Local Preachers.  Others with an interest in worship are also welcome.
    • The Zoom sessions (roughly monthly on Saturday mornings) will include small group times when Local Preachers and Worship Leaders meet separately to consider their roles as well as presentations and discussions led by a team of tutors from across Scotland and Shetland.
    • The first session took place on 15th January – this can now be watched on the Learning Network Scotland and Shetland YouTube channel, along with an introductory video to the whole programme (session 0).
    • The next session will be on Saturday 5th February 9:30-11am.  To receive the Zoom link, register for the programme here.

If you have any questions or comments, please get in touch with Jill Baker (ejillbaker@btinternet.com) or Lorraine Darlow (darlowl@methodistchurch.org.uk).

  • Welcoming refugee families in Scotland through Community Sponsorship

    Thursday 3rd February, 5.30 pm

Hospitality is a core value of all faith communities in Scotland. Join Scottish Faiths Action for Refugees and Citizens UK to explore what it looks like to express radical hospitality and a faithful welcome to a new refugee family.

Citizens UK will explain how community sponsorship works and you will hear from a family who has been resettled through this programme and the faith community who has welcomed them. There will also be an opportunity to consider possible next steps for community sponsorship in your context.

Community sponsorship is a refugee resettlement programme with local people at its heart. It provides a safe route for refugees at risk to reach Scotland and build a life here as part of a supportive community. It is a shared endeavour where one or more faith communities can work together to prepare for and welcome a refugee family to their local area. The group then supports the family through their first year in the UK to live independent lives, learn English, and access schools, benefits, healthcare and employment and participate fully in the community.

For more details, please see the Scottish Faiths Action for Refugees website.

    Please register via Eventbrite.

  • Easter Offering 2022

Tell Her Story, Tell Our Story

Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come.
She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.

    Proverbs 31:25-26 (NRSV)

This year’s theme, ‘Tell Her Story, Tell Our Story’ features the stories of women which have often been forgotten or overlooked. They are stories of courage, compassion and calls for change. The theme is inspired by the tenth anniversary of Methodist Women in Britain and the work it has done to empower and enable women around the world.

The offerings collected during this act of worship go to the World Mission Fund of the Methodist Church in Britain. As we listen to and reflect on the stories of women from around the world and through time, we will consider how we can share our story, our sisters’ stories and God’s story with the world.

  • New Year Prayer

    Print Version

The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.’ (John 1: 5)

As we reach the end of a year and turn towards the year that is to come, the dark shadow of Covid-19 still lies over us and the community of which we are a part.

There is no part of our society that has not been impacted and no part of our community that has not suffered.

We have endured much and struggled with the abiding uncertainty that still clouds our vision of the year ahead.

Nevertheless, no matter how abiding the uncertainty and the darkness of the shadow, the Gospel affirms that: ‘the darkness did not overcome it’.

The darkness has not overcome the ‘light that shines in the darkness’.

The Gospel affirmation is especially resonant at this time for it affirms that at no point is the light of the Word come from God consumed by darkness.

We know and affirm by faith that the ‘Word became flesh and lived among us’. (John 1: 14)

In the year that is to come, the light of God abides and no darkness will consume it.

We ask the One who is the light of the world to give us light that we may walk safely, even where darkness abides: ‘The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.’

    We pray:

    Light of the World,
May You arise and shine even in the face of darkness:
We come as those who have dwelt in the shadows
And shared in the suffering and uncertainty of these times.
Abide with us and shed Your light amongst us
That we might know Your abiding presence.
    Lord, in Your mercy
    Hear our prayer.

    Light of the World,
    May You arise and shine even in the face of darkness;
We come as those who have sought Your light
In the year that is now past.
We give thanks that You have led us safe thus far
And that You shall lead us home.
    Lord, in Your mercy
    Hear our prayer.

    Light of the World,
May You arise and shine even in the face of darkness:
We come as those who journey on towards the horizon
Where light shall surely break and the darkness be vanquished.
We pray for the bereaved and for the bereft
And ask that You would draw near to them in Your compassion.
    Lord, in Your mercy
    Hear our prayer.

    Light of the World,
May You arise and shine even in the face of darkness:
We come as those who now step forth
Into the year that is to come.
We ask of You light for the days that lie ahead
And, once more, the knowledge of Your abiding presence.
    Lord, in Your mercy
    Hear our prayer.
