Stories of Journeys – 3 Feb at 1:30pm

Where have we come from as a church? Who have been the pioneers, what lessons have been learned from where it went wrong. Led by Revd Helen Cameron

Stories of Justice – 4 Feb at 7:30pm

Coordinated by the young people from our districts, sharing stores that have come from 3Generate and the church priorities

Stories of Dignity – 5 Feb at 10am

The lived reality of inclusion in the church. What a safe space feels like and what it feels like when church is not safe. Led by Pauline Jackson

Stories of Solidarity – 6 Feb at 1:30pm

Examples of good practice, stories of where things are working well and the positive impact of finding a safe space in church. Led by Revd Mark Rowland

    Each session lasts 90 minutes.

The theme chosen for the Regional Safeguarding Conference this year is based around the Justice, Dignity and Solidarity (JDS) strategy which was adopted by the Methodist Conference of 2021.

There are four sessions planned which we hope will draw out some of the lessons learnt and how to apply them in the context of safeguarding and our church life and ministry.
We will be using our stories to explore the JDS strategy through the lens of Safeguarding.

You can book on one or more of the sessions when you register to reserve a slot. The sessions are also recorded and will be available after the event.

As you know, the Methodist Church in Scotland will be a single circuit from 1st September 2025.  This change is an opportunity to look at how we worship, how we support one another and how we can learn and grow together.

Whilst worship leaders normally operate only in their own congregation, the move to a single circuit will affect fellowship and training so there will be an opportunity for all worship leaders in Scotland (and those in training) to come together on Zoom to share ideas, concerns, questions and suggestions.

The evening will be led by Rev. Adam Stevenson (Superintendent minister of the Forth Valley Circuit and Superintendent-Designate for the Scotland Circuit) and Kathryn Campbell (Learning Network) along with Anne Baird (District WLP Secretary) and Jill Baker (District WLP Tutor).

Do contact Adam adam.stevenson@methodist.org.uk or Kathryn campbellk@methodistchurch.org.uk for any more information.

So please put Tuesday 11th March 2025 at 7:30pm in your diary and share this with Worship Leaders in your church or circuit – the Zoom link will be available nearer the time.

flyer for bible month training day 15 March 2025

Our Bible Month book for 2025 is… The Gospel of John!

John’s Gospel opens by presenting Jesus as the Word of God – the source of life and light for all people (John 1:1-18). In Jesus, we encounter God’s boundless, gracious love, which brings us into a relationship with him as his children. Through Jesus, the fullness of grace and truth is offered to everyone willing to receive it.

Join us for the adventure and discover for yourself the life-giving truths that this brilliant book ponders and imparts.

This day is specifically for those involved in leading Bible Month on the ground – Ministers, Local Preachers and Worship Leaders and those working with Children, Youth and Families – and will equip them to run Bible Month in their churches and circuits.

    • Explore the text and some key features that will help you grapple with it
    • Discover some of the resources on offer to help you as your prepare for worship
    • Reflect on some of the key themes and stories of the Gospel of John and how you can lead churches into them.

Join us in 1 of 2 ways:

We will be live streaming this event on YouTube and you can tune in from wherever you are across the Connexion.

    1. Watch ONLINE at home

If you’re unable to gather with others from your church or circuit, you can still join in from home. A YouTube link will be sent direct to you in the build up to the event, and recordings will be available afterwards too.

    2. Attend a local HUB

We’d strongly encourage you to gather with others from your local setting to engage with this training together. We will be working with a number of ‘Hubs’ from around the country to host you in person. Please contact your District or circuit to find out if there any hubs local to you. If you would like to register to host a HUB please see information below.

This course is for leaders who really want to reach new people but also understand that evangelism is a word with baggage. It’s for leaders who want to discover their inner evangelists – and it’s for those who’d rather they remained undiscovered! It’s for leaders who are thinking: ‘evangelism was never part of my training for ministry’ or ‘if I mention evangelism in my place, everyone will run a mile and never come back’. It’s for leaders who are wondering how to help others grow in confidence in their faith. It’s for leaders who know they have a responsibility when it comes to evangelism, but are busy people trying to keep the show on the road. It’s for leaders who are questioning whether evangelism is possible in a holistic, inclusive, relational and authentic way.

This is a free course for all leaders in the Methodist Church (lay and ordained, paid and unpaid, including but not exclusive to Superintendents, Presbyters, Deacons, Local Lay Pastors, Pioneers, Children, Youth and/or Family Workers, Chaplains, Church or Circuit Stewards, or leaders of mission, social action or outreach projects).

In 2020 the Methodist Conference adopted a Church-wide strategy for Evangelism and Growth, deepening our commitment to being an evangelistic Church. Leaders are crucial for this commitment. This course aims to equip leaders in their contexts to: confidently model what it means to follow our shared calling to evangelism; to intentionally prioritise and promote evangelism and to cultivate a culture of confident, authentic faith sharing which raises up those spiritually gifted as Evangelists. There are five sessions, each two hours long:

    • Session 1: Evangelism: actually good news?

    • Session 2: Everyone an Evangelist: even me?

    • Session 3: Are we making disciple-making disciples?

    • Session 4: Action planning for evangelism

    • Session 5: How do we know we’re doing evangelism right?

The course will run again in April 2025, dates and booking link below:

    Session 1: Tuesday 1st April, 10.30am-12.30pm
    Session 2: Tuesday 8th April, 10.30am-12.30pm
    Session 3: Tuesday 29th April, 10.30am-12.30pm
    Session 4: Tuesday 6th May, 10.30am-12.30pm
    Session 5: Tuesday 15th July, 10.30am-12.30pm

This course will run on Zoom. You’ll receive an email with all the joining details closer to the time if you’ve registered. When you register for a course, please commit to attending all five sessions – if you don’t think that’s going to be possible then you’ll need to let us know. If you have any questions please contact Holly Adams, Evangelism and Contemporary Culture Officer on adamsh@methodistchurch.org.uk

In response to Our Calling, Methodist people are to help others to grow and learn as Christians, through mutual support and care. Who Cares? is a series of four 2-hour sessions that introduces participants to the possibilities of pastoral care – creating appropriate environments and developing practices that welcome, support and care for others in their role. It draws on insights and underpinning knowledge in the areas below:

Session 1: Introducing Pastoral Care (8/10)

Session 2: Welcome and Hospitality in Pastoral Care (15/10)

Session 3: Listening and Prayer in Pastoral Practice (22/10)

Session 4: Care in Difficult Times and Self-care in Pastoral Practice (29/10)

All sessions will run from 7-9pm.

The sessions will set churches and Methodist communities on a sound footing to envision and enable a culture of care in their context.

Sessions 1 and 2 particularly consider welcome, hospitality and discipleship in the context of pastoral care and reflect on the pastoral nature of these in our church communities, recognising our shared responsibility and gifts for pastoral care.

Session 3 will help participants to develop listening and communication skills, particularly using language and prayer appropriately and sensitively in pastoral situations.

Session 4 introduces participants to the impact of trauma, transition and loss on individuals, families and groups and helps them understand appropriate boundaries and balance, including self-care, in pastoral ministry, and highlights the importance of reflective practice.

As the ceasefire in Gaza is welcomed, the question of a lasting and just peace in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territory remains. Join Christian Aid for a conversation with Peter Nasir, National General Secretary of the East Jerusalem YMCA as we look beyond the ceasefire.

As part of the ecumenical efforts and series of upcoming events, this event is hosted by Christian Aid and Embrace the Middle East.

Many of us united on World Peace Day as part of the Churches Together in Britain and Ireland call to prayer – we must continue to pray and act for justice and peace. You can find a range of resources for your church from organisations involved here.

Poster for The Earth is the Lord's event

We are invited to join the Church of Scotland’s Public Life and Social Justice team for a one hour webinar from 1-2pm on Tuesday 25 November.

We will discover more about our role as Christians in caring for God’s gift of creation and learn how sustainable use of church land can play a crucial role in addressing the climate crisis, bio-diversity loss, and reducing harmful emissions. The discussion will be led by Sharon Hall, Campaign Manager at Operation Noah, and chaired by Rev Dr Richard Frazer. Reflections and worship will be led by Rev David Coleman, Eco-Congregation Scotland.
