At our Spring Synod a project team was established to lead the District in a ‘root and branch’ review with the aim of working out a realistic new vision and practical ways forward for the Methodist Church in Scotland. We cannot go on the way things are. Our structures and our ways of working are sapping energy and preventing us from being effective in our calling. Synod was unanimous that changes are needed, and lots of ideas were generated.
At Synod we were privileged to have Martyn Atkins lead our thoughts on the shape of the Methodist Church in Scotland in 2015 and beyond. His overall message was that when Methodism is true to itself it is a broad, evangelical, mission-shaped movement. Put even more simply, Methodism is a discipleship, disciple-making movement.
The project team will be distilling these and other ideas (e.g. from circuit reviews and discussions in the Superintendents Forum). We will set in motion discussions in churches and circuits, as well as an open forum on this site. Together, all our input will lead to proposals that will be voted on at the spring Synod in 2011.
Please participate: the future of Methodism in Scotland is at stake!
